Ever wondered what baptism is all about? Why should we be baptized? How should we be baptized? What does it all mean? Ever thought of taking the step but not sure what will be required of you?
What is baptism?
BAPTISM is about identification- it is a public declaration that we have identified with Jesus’ death and resurrection, that we acknowledge He died for us personally and that we identify with His church. It is a sign of what Christ has done for us.
However, we often become confused because different churches preach different view points regarding baptism. Sometimes, our view of baptism is sometimes based on our tradition or culture rather than studying what the Bible teaches. So what does the Bible say about baptism?
BAPTISM IS A NATURAL STEP FROM SALVATION-
Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. -Acts 2 v 41
But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.- Acts 8 v 12
BAPTISM IS ABOUT IDENTIFICATION, NOT A MEANS TO BE SAVED
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. -Romans 6 vs 3-4
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. -Colossians 2 v 12
TIMING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE METHOD
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teachingg them to obey everything I have commanded you. -Matthew 28 vs 19-20
Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. -Acts 2 v 38
